Why your sprint board and your timesheet should be the same system
Most teams plan in one place and log time in another, then spend the retrospective guessing at how the two relate.
A product team can usually tell you what shipped last sprint. Far fewer can tell you what it cost, because the board lives in one tool and the hours live in another, and nothing joins them.
The question nobody can answer
"How long did that feature actually take?" sounds simple. With separate tools, answering it means exporting hours, exporting tickets, matching them up by name and date, and accepting that the result is roughly right. Nobody does this more than once.
What changes when they share a system
- Every hour is already attached to a task, because that is how the timer was started.
- A task carries its own estimate and its own actual, side by side, with no reconciliation.
- A sprint report can show delivery and effort together, because they came from the same records.

Estimates stop being folklore
When every task records what it was expected to take and what it took, a few sprints produce something genuinely useful: a picture of where your team consistently underestimates.
It is almost never the coding. It is the review cycles, the environment problems and the third round of small changes. You cannot plan for those until you can see them, and you cannot see them until estimate and actual sit on the same card.
Use this to improve estimating, not to grade people. The moment a team believes estimates are a performance measure, every estimate doubles and the data becomes useless to everybody.
The retrospective gets shorter
Instead of opinions about where the sprint went, you open one screen: what was planned, what was done, and where the hours went. The conversation moves straight to why, which is the only part worth spending the meeting on.
And nobody fills in a timesheet
This is the part developers care about. If the timer runs against the task they are already working on, the timesheet is a by-product rather than a Friday afternoon chore reconstructed from memory — which is also why it ends up accurate.
